Too Small For God?

A short time ago, my family and I sat down for a family devotion time. This particular time, we had the “assignment” to find our favorite scripture verse or story and tell why that was important to us. My seven year old chose the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 with the five loaves of bread and two fish. Now most people probably focus on the miracle of Jesus producing so much food from such a small amount—and it truly was miraculous! But that day, what caught my attention was Jesus used a small boy, possibly even a seven year old like my son, to work with and through. I have to admit, I shed a few tears over that.

You see, I wear a lot of “hats” in my life. I’m a wife, mom, daughter, homemaker, chauffeur, cook, shopper, singer/songwriter, business owner, Vice-President of Christian Divas, radio producer, column writer, worship team/choir member, youth sponsor, teacher and the list could go on and on. I’m just like you. Doing a million and one things with never enough time for everything. But many times, even in the hustle and bustle of life, I feel very insignificant and wonder how in the world God could use me—an ordinary person—just like everyone else—to do anything for Him. But I have to remind myself that I am His, everything I have is His, and everything I am is because of Him. What He wants from me is a willing heart. No matter what “hat” I am wearing, I can show Jesus’ love and be a representative of Him. “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many? Jesus said, ‘Have the people sit down,’…Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.” John 6: 9-11.
Sometimes He asks great things from us. Sometimes He uses the small things. Just as Jesus took what a boy had to offer, even when it seemed small, Jesus can use what I have to offer—even when I think what I have may be small. Join with me in looking for ways to use what Jesus has given you as you wear your many “hats” this week.
